A Brief Bio of George Gergen

George Matthew Gergen passed peacefully on Thursday, March 13th, 2025. He was surrounded by music and love up until his final moments. He leaves behind his loving wife of 35 years, Barbara and three daughters: Lisa Gergen, Bridgette Gergen, and Maya Peltier.

Born April 13th, 1954, George was the youngest of a large family. Much to the chagrin of his parents, he was inclined to mischief and mayhem from an early age. Yet, he could swiftly dissuade any frustration with the twinkle in his eye and a toothy grin. At a young age, he found an outlet for creative pursuits through his love of music.

Throughout his life, George worked in a variety of industries as a steel worker, woodworker, and computer specialist. His true ambition was always music. Throughout his life, he honed his natural gifts as a musician to produce countless recordings of him playing anything from guitars and drums to strumming on the banjo to gruffly singing. He raised his daughters to put integrity, fairness, and open mindedness, first and foremost. They will forever remember his humor, his fashion sense, and the lessons they've learned across a lifetime.

In the summer of 2018, George suffered a catastrophic aneurysm that left him with mental and physical challenges. His wife, Barbara, retired and began a second career as his full time caretaker. This event drastically changed his life and the lives of his family. Through the love and strength of family, George was able to enjoy the remaining years of his life and leave behind memories that will forever be embraced by those who loved him.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Our Lady of Peace for providing the dignity, care, and love during for the last weeks of his life that he so richly deserved. George was preceded in death by his parents (Fred and Eleanor); daughter Michelle; sisters Mary Jane and Barbara Sekevitch; and brothers Jerry, James, Bill, and Michael. In addition to his wife and daughters, he is survived by his grandchildren Natalia, Filip, and Nina; and his brothers Fred (Janice), Steve (Lois), Dan (Brandy), Tom (Boey), and Edward (Darcie).
